Poise + Performance: Rachel Guest

Updated: Sep 25, 2021

Meet Multi-event champion and American Record Holder, Rachel Guest, striving for even greater!

What inspires you?

I am inspired by the thrill of competition and the challenge to push my “maturing” body to limits that many may find unattainable at an older age.

What's your specific athletic goal for this year?

My goals for the upcoming 2022 season are to break my current American Record in the W45 80m hurdles while simultaneously training to break the world record for the W45 heptathlon.

What is the most significant challenge you are facing in reaching your goal?

Managing the training demands for the 7 events in the heptathlon. Working as a director/instructor for In Motion Dance and as a head girls track coach for Willow Canyon HS, it is a balancing act managing the physical demands of work and training. Recovery is a top priority for any athlete let alone when you are 46 years old.

What is a technical aspect of your sport you are focusing on or have previously improved?

I have put together a training plan for the next 10 months that will have a stronger emphasis on my throwing events without taking away the necessary work for the other 5 events. The shot put and javelin are events I have the greatest opportunity to improve and gain points necessary to set the record I am attempting to break.

‘Always strive to be the best version of yourself. Focus on what you can control…YOU! You cannot control what your competitors will or will not do. You can control what you do and how you manage yourself during training and competition. " ~ Rachel Guest

What is your approach to Recovery?

I am a believer that you must listen to your body. We can have the most well thought out training plans, but there will be times the body may need more or less. Taking the time to recover when the body needs it is a must. As I age, I have found my body often needs more recovery than when I was younger. I focus on stretching, foam rolling, Pilates, regular massage and adjustments, sleep and Ion soaks.
